December 2013 – Attend NMPHA Policy Conference

Cheryl Christopherson, VP of Business Development, attended the New Mexico Public Health Association’s 10th Annual Legislative Health Policy Forum in Albuquerque, NM. It was a great opportunity to get updates on the NM Health Exchange, the Affordable Care Act as it relates to NM DOH, Medicaid Expansion/Centennial Care, the state of NM behavioral health, and priorities for the approaching NM legislative session.

November 2013 – Develop Community Health Worker Curriculum

We’re working with the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Urban Health Partners to develop training curriculum for Pathways navigators. We’re currently writing sections related to service coordination skills, advocacy, and community knowledge and assessment. The curriculum will be piloted with navigators in the coming months.

In the near future, the curriculum will be adapted for New Mexico’s statewide community health worker (CHW) competency training. As part of the Affordable Care Act, many community health centers can now be reimbursed through Medicaid for work that CHWs do. To be reimbursed, CHWs will need to complete a training (what we’re helping to develop curriculum for) and a practicum. We’re excited to be a part of the larger statewide team in this effort!

Oct 2013 – Customer Service Training

We just finished a customer service training with Native Community Development Associates (NCDA) for First Choice Community Healthcare. It was a great success and a lot of fun! Cheryl Christopherson (Soda Creek) was the lead trainer and Melissa Riley (NCDA) co-facilitated. Participants were engaged, involved, and asked many great questions. In addition to co-owning Soda Creek, Ms. Christopherson is a full-time Registered Nurse. Her hands-on experience in the medical field is an invaluable asset when training other medical professionals. They can easily relate to her and her examples when they know she “walks the talk.” Great job, Cheryl!

When we lead trainings we emphasize adult learning principles. This includes creating a safe and comfortable environment, doing activities that are appropriate for different learning styles, building off the expertise and experiences of everyone in the room, and ensuring people can immediately apply what they learn to their work and life.
